Getting started

How do I start?

Open Snapisodes, allow access to photos and videos and start an event on the home screen, for example “Holiday in Croatia”, with an end time or until you end it yourself. Then shoot with your usual camera: every new photo joins the event, and when it ends, its photos stay together as an episode. To add a comment, open a photo and tap the microphone, or type it.

Which permissions does the app need, and why access to all photos?

Photos and videos: Snapisodes is a gallery and files every new shot into the running event, so it needs to see all your photos; with access to selected photos only, new shots are not found. Location in photos: to read the GPS position saved in your photos for the map and trips; the app never tracks where your phone is. Microphone: only while you dictate. Notifications: the running event and reminders. Optional: steps and distance from Health Connect, read only. The app never changes your original photos and videos, so it asks for no permission to modify them.

Does Snapisodes change my photos?

No, never. Snapisodes does not change your original photos and videos in any format: no episode name, comment or other data is written into the files. Episodes, comments and descriptions are kept in the app's database on the phone and in its backups. If you rotate a photo, the app saves a rotated copy and moves the episode and comment to it; the original stays as it was.

Is there a version for iPhone?

Not yet. Snapisodes is for Android 8 and newer.

Episodes and comments

I forgot to start an event. Can I sort photos afterwards?

Yes. In the gallery, select photos, or a whole day or period at once, and add them to a new or an existing episode. Adding photos to an existing episode is always free; only a new episode counts towards the free monthly limit. With Pro, automatic episodes also suggest trips found in photos with GPS (place name suggestions must be on).

Does it work with Google Photos or OneDrive?

Yes. Snapisodes works alongside them and your photos keep uploading as before. The app never changes the files, so nothing is uploaded again; episodes and comments stay in the app and its backups, not in the uploaded copies. Albums and captions from a Google Takeout export can become episodes and comments. With Pro, bad shots you delete can also leave your OneDrive camera backup.

Why don't I see my comments in other apps?

Because comments are never written into the photo files; they are kept by the app and its backups. For other programs, Export XMP for computer saves sidecar .xmp files to Downloads/Snapisodes/XMP, which Lightroom, digiKam and darktable read next to your photos. Most galleries do not show them.

Backup and a new phone

Where are my episodes and comments backed up?

Besides the app itself, in two places: the Android backup of your phone to your Google account (if it is on: Settings → Google → Backup, on Samsung Settings → Accounts and backup) and a backup file in Downloads/Snapisodes/Backup, written every day and within an hour of each change. The last 4 automatic copies are kept, and the one with the newest date and time in its name is the newest backup; the ones you make yourself with Back up now are never deleted. Settings → Backup → Back up now makes one right away. The file holds episodes and comments, not the photos; back up your photos as usual.

What happens when I get a new phone?

On the old phone, tap Settings → Backup → Back up now and move your photos as usual (episodes and comments are matched to the original files by name and time). If you set up the new phone from your Google backup, Snapisodes brings episodes and comments back when it is installed. Otherwise copy the newest snapisodes-backup-….json (the one with the newest date and time in its name) from Downloads/Snapisodes/Backup to the new phone and choose Settings → Backup → Restore from file. Comments are not stored in your photo files, so restoring the Snapisodes backup is what brings them back; the exported .xmp files are meant for other programs (Lightroom, digiKam, darktable). A restore never deletes anything; the newer change wins. Pro comes back with the same Google account.

I reinstalled the app or cleared its data. Are my comments gone?

Not if you have a backup. The files in Downloads/Snapisodes/Backup stay on the phone even after you uninstall the app. Restore one from the welcome screen (Used Snapisodes before? Restore from a backup) or at any time in Settings → Backup → Restore from file. Comments are not stored in your photo files, so the backup is what brings them back; after a reinstall the Android backup can also bring everything back, if it is on.

Deleting and the trash

What happens when I delete a photo?

On Android 11 and newer, photos and videos go to the system trash: you can restore them within 30 days under Trash in the gallery menu, then Android deletes them for good. Android 8 to 10 has no system trash, so after you confirm, the photo is deleted right away. The episode and comment of a deleted photo stay in the app and its backups, so they come back with a restored photo; with access to all photos they are removed by themselves after 180 days.

How does deleting from OneDrive work? (Pro)

In Settings → Delete from OneDrive too, connect your Microsoft account and choose the folder your camera uploads go to. When you delete a photo in Snapisodes, its identical copy in that folder waits for the period you choose (1, 7 or 30 days, or until you tap Delete now) and then goes to the OneDrive recycle bin; nothing is deleted for good. The gallery shows how many photos are waiting, and Waiting and deleted lists them, with Keep on OneDrive. Restoring a photo from the phone's trash takes it off the list.

What are temporary photos?

Photos for one-off use, such as zooming in on a price tag or showing a problem to a repairman. Tap the small Temporary button next to the camera button: the photo goes only into Snapisodes, never into the gallery or a cloud backup, and is deleted after 1, 7 or 30 days or when you decide (Settings → Temporary photos). Save to gallery keeps one for good. A deleted temporary photo cannot be restored.

Privacy

Can you see my photos or comments?

No. Snapisodes has no account and no server of its own and sends nothing to us. Photos, episodes and comments stay on your phone and in your own backups. Recognising what is in a photo (dog, beach, food) runs on the phone, and photos are never uploaded. Diagnostics leave the phone only if you send them yourself.

Do I need internet?

Mostly not. Only these go online: map tiles, dictation (your phone's speech service, offline if the phone can do it), place names and finding your home by address (only if you use them), deleting from OneDrive, and Google Play for buying or restoring Pro. Google Play services downloads the content-recognition model once. Everything else, including recognising photos, runs on the phone.

Free version and Pro

What if I don't buy Pro?

For the first 14 days you get the whole of Pro. Then the free version stays, with no time limit: 3 new episodes and 20 newly commented photos a month, comments up to 20 characters; the counts start again on the 1st of each month. Adding photos to existing episodes, the gallery, map, search, sharing, temporary photos and backup stay free, and nothing you created disappears.

How do I buy Pro, and will I have it on a new phone?

Pro is a one-time purchase on Google Play, with no subscription: Settings → Snapisodes Pro. Google Play shows the price in your currency before you pay. Pro belongs to the Google account you bought it with, so it comes back on a new phone or after a reinstall; if not, tap Restore purchase in Settings → Snapisodes Pro and check that the Play Store uses the same account. Family members with their own Google accounts need their own purchase.

Can I get a refund?

Google Commerce Limited sells in Google Play, so refunds of Play purchases follow Google Play's rules (see Google's refund help). For Pro we also voluntarily refund the price on request within 14 days of purchase: write to us with the order number and we refund it through Google Play. For the Sharing subscription Google refunds in full within 14 days of purchase. After a refund, the app switches back to the free version the next time it checks with Google Play; everything you created stays.

When something doesn't work

Some of my photos are missing in the app.

Most often the app may see only selected photos. If the gallery says only selected photos are visible, allow all photos: Android Settings → Apps → Snapisodes → Permissions → Photos and videos → Allow all. Photos in folders hidden from galleries (with a .nomedia file) and on a memory card that is not inserted are not shown either.

New photos join the event late. Does the app drain the battery?

The app does not track your location and keeps no service running all the time: it files new photos when Android reports them and recognises photo content only while charging. Some phones delay this background work to save battery. If photos join late or reminders don't come, set battery use for Snapisodes to Unrestricted (Android Settings → Apps → Snapisodes → Battery). Opening the app catches up straight away.
